Tanners Cava EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle (Qualifier) (GBB Race)

(Class 4) (4-6yo) (1m7f169yds) 2m Soft 9 hurdles

The biggest field of the day with 15 runners going to post, the betting dominated by the odds-on favourite and highly regarded Go To War, tipped as the best novice hurdler in Fergal O’Brien’s yard.

The race was run at a fast pace from the off, which slightly caught Magic out as he wasn’t his usual fluent self over the first couple of hurdles, but Harry kept him up well with the pace, sitting in 4th or 5th place throughout.

The ground was very pluggy and testing, with almost half the runners across the day pulling up, but Magic just got on with the job in hand and never showed any signs of easing up.

Around the final bend the favourite started to take control, pulling away from the leading group approaching the last, however Magic didn’t give up taking the last two hurdles well and overtaking the horse in front to finish a creditable 5th. He did everything we wanted and was again nicely in his stride and running on at the 2 mile stage. He came out of the race well and the handicapper came back the following week with a mark of 106. See vid below for Harry’s feedback.
