The full circle thoroughbred experience

race report: Hexham

Horse – Nickolson

Trainer – Julie Wadland

Jockey – Jack Andrews

Date – 27/11/22

Result – 1/8

Eight runners went to post in what initially looked a competitive race over 2½ miles on soft going.

Market confidence however (partly based on Nikolson’s quality as a chaser top-rated 134 over fences and the Julie Wadland/Jack Andrews combination) meant he was sent off as the odds-on favourite at 4/6.

The field set a steady gallop through the race, with less than 8 lengths covering first to last for the first circuit or so.

Nickolson jumped well throughout and was always in a nice stride, allowing Jack the opportunity to switch him off at times and sit in the middle and rear of the group at will.

As the pace started to hot up and others came under pressure, Jack easily moved Nikolson through the field and with what seemed like plenty in hand took the lead coming into the home straight.

Although he idled slightly after hitting the front, Nickolson picked up well and quickened away as soon as the second horse got near him. He was never in any real danger of being caught for what was an easier 3 length margin than the winning result suggests.
